The Komainu Gurdian (lion dog) katana has been traditionally forged and laminated in the shihozume tradition. The core of the blade is formed from softer, more malleable steel giving it exceptional flexibility. A layer of slightly harder steel is bonded to each side and the top of the core to add support. The last layer is a very hard steel bonded to the bottom of the core forming the ha (cutting edge). This form of laminar construction provides for a sword with the hard edge of a high carbon steel blade, but with greater flexibility.
