The Matsuba katana has been traditionally forged and laminated in the shihozume tradition. The core of the blade is formed from softer, more malleable steel giving it exceptional flexibility. A layer of slightly harder steel is bonded to each side and the top of the core to add support. The last layer is a very hard steel bonded to the bottom of the core forming the ha (cutting edge). This form of laminar construction provides for a sword with the hard edge of a high carbon steel blade, but with greater flexibility.
