The Shisa(lion dog) Water Guardian katana has been traditionally forged and laminated in the gomae kitae tradition (five layer steel). This school combines panels of hard and soft steel for superior edge retention and shock absorption. The inner core is formed from hard steel, follow by a U shaped layer of soft steel. This in turn is followed by a U shaped layer of hard steel. As shock travels across the blade, it encounters five layers of alternating steel strength.
